Excavation Foreman

The Excavation Foreman leads excavation crews and equipment on site, keeping projects safe, on plan, and on schedule. This role runs daily field operations and holds the crew to QNC’s safety and quality standards.

Working at QNC

QNC builds custom homes, so the crew experiences something new almost every day. A successful foreman doesn’t continue to do what isn’t working. Instead, they evaluate the situation with the crew, collaborate on solutions, and adjust plans as needed. That starts with a clear plan before the day begins, so the crew shows up ready instead of waiting to be told. It’s how QNC protects a decade of client trust, one job site at a time.

This position emphasizes leadership, planning, coaching, and accountability. QNC needs someone who wants to develop people: who takes time to teach instead of taking over, plans ahead instead of reacting hour to hour, and stops to ask “what else could we try” instead of continuing to do something that isn’t working.

Daily contact: the crew (planning, training, and problem-solving together) and the Construction Manager. Regular contact: other foremen and subcontractors on handoffs. Outside the company: clients on site and inspectors. This person represents QNC in every one of those conversations.

What Success Looks Like

  • Plans and communicates the day before it starts, not reacting as it unfolds
  • Stops and rethinks when something isn’t working, instead of repeating it
  • Teaches the crew to solve problems, not just execute
  • Comfortable with the unfamiliar. New challenges are a normal part of custom construction
  • Owns project outcomes, crew performance, and jobsite quality

Top 5 Skills

  • Problem solving. Custom builds mean something new comes up often. Stop, reassess, and adapt instead of continuing to do what isn’t working.
  • Crew development. Turns instructions into teaching moments, so the crew learns to think critically and build confidence, not just follow orders.
  • Blueprint & Site Interpretation. Reads blueprints, grades, and drawings, and site conditions to make informed field decisions
  • Proactive communication. Flags problems to the Construction Manager before they become delays, on site and off.
  • Equipment and safety command. Runs and oversees excavators, loaders, and skid steers. Enforces safety as a standard, not an afterthought.
  • Responsibilities and Duties

Crew Leadership & Planning

  • Supervise the crew and set a clear plan each day, adjusting as timelines and site conditions change
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members. Work alongside them when needed

Site Execution

  • Coordinate grading, trenching, site prep, and utility installation
  • Read blueprints and site plans. Lay out and verify grades with measuring tools, lasers, and other equipment
  • Maintain equipment and keep the tool trailer and work truck organized and stocked

Safety

  • Train the crew on safe equipment use. Spot and fix hazards before they become incidents

Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate with the Construction Manager, subcontractors, and inspectors. Report status daily to Construction Manager
  • Keep accurate records: daily photos, receipts, checklists, work order notes
  • Keep the job site clean, safe, and organized

Other duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business operations

Experience & Qualifications

  • 3+ years in excavation and site work, ideally with non-standard conditions that required adapting on the fly
  • Experience operating and overseeing excavators, loaders, and skid steers
  • Strong knowledge of excavation methods, grading, trenching, and underground utilities
  • Ability to read plans, drawings, blueprints, and grade stakes
  • Demonstrated leadership experience leading, coaching, and developing a crew, not just assigning tasks.
  • Valid driver’s license including commercial driver’s license (CDL) required

Requirements

  • Work outdoors in varied weather conditions on uneven terrain and active construction sites
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, crouch, climb, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work around heavy equipment and moving machinery

Position Type: Full time

Schedule: Hours: minimum of 45 hours per week (Monday through Friday) Additional hours may be required based on project needs
